Ella is a small backpacker-hub on the southern edge of Sri Lanka's Hill Country. It's situated in the middle of beautiful countryside, with small vegetable plots in the valleys, tea plantations on the hill slopes and forests on the tops.

History and Culture

Ella is nestled in a valley at about 1000m elevation, surrounded by even higher mountains. The hills surrounding Ella are all covered with farmland growing vegetables, tea plantations, and rice fields, all making the landscape very lush and green. The views through Ella Gap are stunning, and on a clear night you can even spy the subtle glow of the Great Basses lighthouse on Sri Lanka’s south coast.Ella is blessed with some of the most beautiful views, you could find in Sri Lanka. Sights in Ella include the Ravana Ella Falls, Little Adam's Peak and Bambaragala Peak amongst other stunning scenery. Take one of the most beautiful train rides from Nuwara Eliya to Ella and fall in love with the surroundings.

The route takes you through vast open tea plantations and is the perfect way to take in the local landscape. It takes about 4 hours in total, and you can enjoy the journey in either direction.

The two famous treks in the area are Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock, not to mention Ravana Falls and other famous waterfalls in the area. For overnight walkers and camping enthusiasts, Ella is a great starting point for the Meemure hike and longer waterfall explorations.

Visit Lipton’s Seat

Ella

Lipton’s Seat in Haputale is a great morning or afternoon trip from Ella. In the morning, take a short train ride to Haputale. Once you reach the station, get a tuk-tuk which takes you up to the top where, back in 1890, Mr. Lipton, planted the first seeds of what now is Sri Lanka’s biggest export product, Lipton Tea.
