Shillong is the capital city of the State as well as the District headquarter of East Khasi Hills District. The name Shillong is derived from U-Shyllong, a powerful deity and is situated at an altitude of 1,491m above sea level. This beautiful city is 103kms. from Guwahati, the nearest air and train link. The presence of many well reputed educational institutions, many of them established by various missionary groups make Shillong the hub of education for the entire north-east.

Climate /Best time to visit: The shoulder seasons March to June: March and April see the advent of summers but the weather is still quite pleasant. Summers are overall mild and a good time to plan a trip in Shillong with the temperature ranging from a maximum of 24°C to a minimum of 15°C (75-59°F). This is the perfect time to plan sightseeing and adventure activities.

October to February: October is when the rainfall stops and the weather begins to cool down. Winters start setting in from November after which the weather can be quite cold with the minimum temperature going as low as 2°C (36°F). The town looks beautiful in the chilly months and is a good time to indulge in outdoor activities.
